Synthetic vs. Conventional Oil

Taking care of your vehicle means that it can continue taking care of you out on the Lake Worth and Delray roads. And ensuring that your vehicle is getting the right oil is on the list of important maintenance items. So, if you’re wondering, “What’s the difference between synthetic vs. regular oil?” we’re here to help clear things up for you. Take a look at our guide below for more information. Or contact us with any questions!

What is Conventional (Regular) Oil?

Conventional oil, or “regular” oil, is a petroleum-based substance that has been used in internal combustion engines for many years. It provides lubrication to internal engine parts and reduces engine wear. Motor oil is distilled from crude oil, which is mined from the ground, and it also helps protect your car’s engine from high temperatures.

What is Synthetic Oil?

Synthetic oil is petroleum-based like regular oil, but it provides enhanced lubrication properties and is more stable. Synthetic oils oxidize less easily than conventional oils, and they also retain their protective properties for longer, which helps protect your engine between oil changes. Additionally, synthetic oils:

  • Are less viscous at lower temperatures
  • Offer enhanced engine cleaning properties
  • Better protect critical turbocharger parts (when equipped)

How Do Full Synthetic vs. Synthetic Blends Differ?

In addition to synthetic and conventional oils (often called mineral oils), there are also synthentic blends. These are a mix of synthetic and conventional oils, which helps reduce the cost compared to full synthetic oil while still offering enhanced properties compared to standard conventional oil.

If you’re unsure which oil or blend is best for your vehicle, you can always schedule a service appointment, and our knowledgeable technicians will help point you in the right direction.
